Causes

The exact cause of fibroadenomas is unknown, but they are thought to be related to reproductive hormones. Fibroadenomas occur more often during your reproductive years, can become bigger during pregnancy or with use of hormone therapy, and might shrink after menopause, when hormone levels decrease.

Types of Fibroadenomas

In addition to simple fibroadenomas, there are:

1. Complex fibroadenomas: These can contain changes, such as an overgrowth of cells (hyperplasia) that can grow rapidly. A pathologist makes the diagnosis of a complex fibroadenoma after reviewing the tissue from a biopsy.
2. Juvenile fibroadenomas: This is the most common type of breast lump found in girls and adolescents between the ages of 10 and 18. These fibroadenomas can grow large, but most shrink over time, and some may disappear.
3. Giant fibroadenomas: These can grow to larger than 2 inches (5 centimeters). They might need to be removed because they can press on or replace other breast tissue.
4. Phyllodes tumor: Although usually benign, some phyllodes tumors can become cancerous (malignant).

Diagnosing Fibroadenomas

If you find a lump in your breast, you should consult a doctor. You can’t tell for sure what it is by how it feels. Your doctor will likely feel the lump so they can gauge its texture and size. Even if they think it might be a fibroadenoma, they may recommend that you get more tests to confirm it.

You may get an ultrasound or a mammogram, depending on your age and whether you’re pregnant. Both are quick scans that you’ll get in the doctor’s office. A radiologist will then check the images of your breast tissue to see if it’s a fibroadenoma or something else.’
